Aware of the hazards of writing an imperial history with a "decline and fall" title, Piers Brendon assures us in his second sentence that he is not trying to rival Edward Gibbon. He is echoing his predecessor's wording only because the work of the great historian of Rome "has a profound and hitherto unexplored relevance" to the disappearance of Britain's empire.
