"Recording of the week: The last ounce of acerbic bite that I occasionally felt was missing from previous instalments has clearly been saved for this performance of the Fourth ... For me this series just gets better and better, and the execution of this latest pair of symphonies, both in terms of Nelsons's pacing and shaping of the very long movements and also with regard to the virtuoso playing, is really rather staggering"

"Recording of the month: First, the Fourth ... The BSO play with immense precision and character, the recording detailed, spacious and so very present ... But it's the reflective passages - the soft, silken strings unspooling most beautifully, the brass and winds so haunting - that make this such a memorable reading ... In the Eleventh ... this confluence of talents has produced as powerful and persuasive a reading of this symphony as I've ever encountered ... Nelsons confirms his credentials as a great Shostakovich conductor ... Performances of great strength and stature, peerlessly played and recorded; the pinnacle of Nelsons' cycle thus far"

"Unlike his Bruckner, Andris Nelsons seems to have real feeling for Shostakovich, and in the Boston Symphony he has far and away the best orchestra for the job. They play the living daylights out of the Fourth Symphony, taking Nelsons' quick tempos in stride, and offering seat-of-your-pants excitement ... It's one of the tightest and most cogent versions available of this sprawling behemoth of a work ... The Eleventh Symphony is a tougher nut to crack ... You never do know quite when it's going to end or where you are in it, and you get the sense that Nelsons hasn't quite got it figured out, but it's smooth sailing afterwards ... If you're collecting this excellent series, keep at it"

"Orchestral choice: Nelsons keeps a firm grip on the unfolding of the drama in the 11th. And here, as in the Fourth, his Boston Symphony Orchestra responds with supreme virtuosity from every section. Whether or not the excellent recordings were really captured live, as DG claims, you'll never hear these symphonies better played"
The gramophone, 2018 September
"Editor's choice: This Nelsons cycle started with a bang - namely the most electrifying recording of the Tenth Symphony we've had in almost half a century. The excellence continues ... Nelsons rejoices in the skewed logic and dotty tangents but does so with a gripping hold on the symphonic argument - tentative though that sometimes is. The impetus and tautness of his account intensify cohesion. And it is fabulously engineered ... Thrilling music, thrillingly realised"
