Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII

Af U.S. Congress (1999)
The landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 includes a section called Title VII, reproduced here, that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The category "sex" was included as a last-ditch effort to kill the bill. Nevertheless, the bill passed, and suddenly women were included in a major piece of anti-discrimination legislation.
