Tar, or bitumen, is a naturally occurring organic substance found in rock. (The term may also refer to a viscous liquid manufactured from processed wood, coal, or oil.) Heavy oil, a dense form of crude oil, is similar in composition to natural tar. Tars and heavy oils have great potential as resources, but large-scale production is not economically practical.
